HS-ESS1-3Stars and Element Formation

Performance expectation

Communicate scientific ideas about the way stars, over their life cycle, produce elements.

What NYSED says about assessing it

Clarification statement

Emphasis is on how nucleosynthesis varies as a function of the mass of a star and the stage of its lifetime.

Assessment boundary

Details of the many different nucleosynthesis pathways for stars of differing masses are not assessed.

The three dimensions

Every item written to HS-ESS1-3 has to assess all three dimensions together, not the content alone. This is the structural change that made older practice material stop matching the exam.
